New Age Pain Management
Vishal Verma DC, NAALT
Advanced Spine & Laser Center
Up until now, pain management was relegated to over-the-counter pain and prescription medications, pain relieving injections, or finally surgical intervention. The times are changing and so are the strategies to battle pain and restore you to your normal daily activities.

There are many proven alternatives for pain relief ranging from meditation and yoga to chiropractic and massage. With so many solutions available today, it is vital that the public educate themselves as to the best option for them. The easiest way is to read articles and research the health concern on the Internet. The Internet has made information gathering easy and effective allowing people to become better informed of the many facets that now exist in healthcare. It is wise to note here that not all information on the Internet can be trusted but at least they should be explored before final judgment is made.

Two solutions that are finding people having high success rates are spinal decompression therapy and cold laser therapy. The latter therapy has been used for decades in Europe and Asia with proven results in pain relief as well as healing promotion. Cold laser has been used on everything from wrist pain to low back pain. The research on this therapy continues to mount and the results are speaking for themselves. Cold laser promotes photobiomodulation or stimulation of the tissue at the cell level by the use of laser light. The sequence of events that follow when laser is used is phenomenal as the cascade of events from increase in microcirculation to tissue healing occurs immediately. Over time, cold laser has shown great results as an alternative solution for pain.

Spinal decompression therapy is fast becoming a proven alternative for low back pain and neck pain relief due to bulging or herniated discs. The latest research has shown that spinal decompression can decrease the disc pressure significantly thereby reducing the bulging disc and the subsequent nerve pressure. To put it in simple terms, this therapy literally decompresses the disc and allows vital nutrients and blood supply to enter the injured disc leading to faster healing times. The success rate has been shown to be 86% with many reaching 92-96% functional relief rates.

These therapies mentioned above are great when utilized together with a well-structured rehabilitation plan designed to meet the individual’s needs. You cannot simply “lie down” on a machine or “shine light” on you. Pain relief is not found without a proactive plan set in place and a willingness to accept responsibility in the treatment. This means that certain guidelines must be adhered to until you are able to increase your functional activity level. No matter what anyone says about the next miracle cure, there is nothing magical about effort and hard work. These therapies are facilitators to your health and well-being but YOU are in control of your health ultimately.
