Malaria is a major international public health problem, causing countless infections worldwide and nearly one million deaths annually. Malaria is transmitted by the bite of a mosquito that is found in almost all countries in the tropics and subtropics. When traveling to countries where malaria is prevalent, it is important to protect yourself from mosquito bites. You can minimize your risk of mosquito bites by not doing outdoor activities between dusk and dawn since that is when most mosquitoes generally feed; using insect repellants on your skin and clothing; using screened-in accommodations; or even wearing light-colored, long-sleeved shirts and pants. Malaria occurs in at least 103 countries, including those in Africa, Central and South America, the Indian subcontinent, Southeast Asia, the Middle East and the islands of the South Pacific. Risk levels depend on the traveler’s destination, duration, season, and location within a country. Malaria is characterized by fever and “flu-like” symptoms. Vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal cramping, and cough may also occur, and the disease may be associated with anemia or jaundice. Malaria can occur about 10-12 days after travel. Infection is potentially life threatening and is considered a medical emergency. Before traveling, seek a travel health doctor at least three weeks before to learn about different malaria medications. If symptoms of malaria occur after travel, prompt medical attention must be sought. |
