If Your Skin Could Talk

If your skin could talk, what would it say?  Believe it or not, it can.  Well, maybe not in the way you think, but the health of your skin is a very good indication of the health of the rest of your body. A good physician will notice the color, texture, dryness and even the odor of your skin during a physical examination and will use these clues to help diagnosis any health problems you might be experiencing. Although it may sound simple, healthy skin usually indicates a healthy body.
Our skin is a miraculous, multi-layered structure that serves as a large part of our immune system, provides insulation and temperature control, synthesizes vitamin D, protects us from the loss of B folates, controls evaporation, stores lipids and water, and excretes toxins. Your skin is the largest organ in your body, and your first line of defense against intruders.
Skin is also very permeable.  This is because it both excretes (sweat and toxins) and absorbs (small amounts of oxygen, carbon dioxide, and nitrogen). This means that anything that touches your skin has the potential to reach your bloodstream within about 15 minutes.  Don’t believe it?  Try this.  Place a freshly peeled clove of garlic between your toes.  Within 15 to 20 minutes (or less) you will begin tasting garlic in your mouth.
Your skin will also show many symptoms of disease or malnutrition long before you are even aware of it. Skin changes can indicate cancer; deficiencies in vitamin A and B, riboflavin, niacin, protein, linoleic acid, iron, protein energy, and foliate; liver and kidney malfunction; parasites; digestive tract failure; internal bleeding. Skin also can reveal emotional stress, lack of sleep, circulatory disorders, dehydration and exposure to environmental toxins.
What can you do to improve your skin and your overall health? Begin with a visit to your physician for a checkup and be sure to report any recent changes or chronic conditions in your skin. Get a full nutritional panel that tests the levels of vitamins, hormones, and minerals in your blood, and looks at the intracellular levels of minerals and the ratio of key minerals. Your physician should also consider ordering a fecal test to evaluate the efficiency of your digestive tract and the quantity and types of bacteria present.
Recent research indicates that the majority of adults in the US show chronic depletions of magnesium and Vitamin D. Consider taking supplements of these vitamins. One method of supplementation is an affordable regimen of IV therapy that provides magnesium chloride, calcium chloride, vitamins B5 and B6, multi-trace minerals, and ascorbic acid. Vitamin IVs will boost your immune system and, by supporting cell function, also help to speed the healing process. They are especially helpful prior to or immediately following surgery.  When the IV regimen is complete, additional supplements are recommended as individually required to maintain healthy levels of nutrients in the future.
