When I meet with patients, either in seminars or on a one-on-one basis, I spend time discussing the reasons why obesity continues to be a problem in the United States. While Americans spend billions of dollars each year on new and innovative weight loss programs, the search for a healthy weight continues to go unanswered for at least 67% of the American population. The problem begins with individuals who attempt to spot clean their lives instead of taking a holistic approach to their health. Excess weight and obesity can often be a symptom of deeper unresolved reasons for concern. According to the Mayo Foundation for Medical Education and Research (MFMER), holistic care focuses “on treating you as a whole person – recognizing that physical health, mental well-being, relationships and spiritual needs are interconnected and play a part in your overall health.” This month I encourage you to devote some time to self-understanding and self-awareness. Sit on the Couch. If you do not already have one, find a clinical psychologist and sit on his/her couch. If you have not seen your psychologist in a while, call to schedule an appointment. I have built a multidisciplinary, weight-loss program that includes a mental health component, because I believe “emotional weight” often surfaces in our physical state. Being open with your psychologist will help you work through the areas of your life that keep your stress levels elevated. Synchronize Your Communication. According to the staff at MFMER, “mind-body techniques strengthen the communication between your mind and body. Complementary and alternative medicine practitioners say these two systems must be in harmony for you to stay healthy.” Besides exercise, there are several ways to stimulate your muscles and reduce stress. An aerobics class, a session of yoga, or a massage can be a very soothing end to a busy day. Breathe to Avoid Burnout. Deep breathing exercises are an excellent way to ease anxiety and step outside of a stressful situation. You can rejuvenate your brain by oxygenating your blood. More oxygen in your blood can relax your muscles and lower your tension level. It’s a good idea to start a deep breathing session when you feel a stressful situation developing or when in an emotionally demanding environment. There are several ways to complement a healthful diet and exercise regimen. If you have ever lost weight and eventually put it back on, plus a few extra pounds, you know that weight loss is more complex than simply trying the latest fad diet. If you have struggled with being seriously overweight and have considered or are considering weight loss surgery, the safest and least invasive surgery should be your goal. Weight loss surgery is only a small part of successful weight loss. Support and improvement in mental, emotional and physical well-being is absolutely imperative. As I tell my patients, if you are contemplating the adjustable gastric band, consider making it part of a comprehensive strategy to improve your general health and well-being. When making your decision, make sure you find a comprehensive program such as ours. It is time for a different approach. |
