Frequently Asked Questions About Acupuncture

What Is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is a complete medical system, originating in China over 5,000 years ago. It applies traditional Chinese medicine theory to diagnose and treat illness, prevent disease, and improve well-being. Throughout its long history, acupuncture has gained a solid reputation as an excellent health care resource. It has been endorsed by the World Health Organization, the National Institutes of Health, and the American Medical Association.
How Does Acupuncture Work?
Acupuncture is based on natural laws and the flow of Chi, or life energy. Chi courses through our bodies in pathways called meridians. In acupuncture, needles are inserted at critical points throughout the body, called acupoints. According to traditional Chinese medicine, the body has more than 360 acupoints, located on the meridian system. Chi flows through these meridians and acupoints to support tissue, muscles, and organs. When the Chi is blocked at the acupoints, body functions can be impaired. Acupuncture treats the underlying causes of Chi distress to manage pain and stimulate healing energies.
What Are the Benefits
of Acupuncture?
Since acupuncture promotes the body’s natural healing ability, it can correct or improve a variety of health conditions. A valid form of therapy for chemical dependence, it is often used to treat drug, alcohol, and smoking problems. Acupuncture is also a comprehensive system for health maintenance, preventive health care, and peak athletic performance.
What conditions are commonly treated by acupuncture?
Acupuncture can treat a wide range of conditions, including arthritis, knee pain, hand and foot pain, lower back and neck pain, shoulder pain, tennis elbow, sciatica, tendonitis, headaches and migraines, facial paralysis, neuralgia, temporomandibular joint (TMJ) syndrome, whiplash, and strokes. It has also been effective in treating anxiety and depression, insomnia, and addictions.
Is acupuncture painful?
Acupuncture is not painful. Different sensations can be felt, from soreness to warmth and pressure, but the energetic sensation differs from pain. People often comment that the feeling is unfamiliar but relaxing, even pleasant.
How many sessions
will I need for treatment?
Everyone is unique. The number of acupuncture treatments required will vary, depending on your condition and health. Your acupuncture practitioner will help you determine a treatment program that’s just right for you.
Does medical insurance cover acupuncture treatment?
It depends on where you live, who your medical insurance company is, and the type of health insurance plan you’re enrolled in. In Maryland, most health insurance companies offer programs that cover acupuncture treatment.
