Self Discipline Is a Muscle

I write this article with the many people who have ever tried to trade unwanted habits for a better life in mind. That statement encompasses a broad spectrum of change: Quitting smoking, losing weight, drinking less alcohol, spending less money, etc. The common goal is the desire to be happy in one’s own skin. I doubt there is anyone who can honestly say that they haven’t attempted to make some changes for the better in their life, only to be met with the harsh realization, it’s hard.
That’s because of the clever design of temptation. The opposite of self-discipline is self-indulgence.  The wrecker of dreams in my opinion. However, there is a treasure for those who have drowned to the depths of self-indulgence. It’s the discovery of the ability to discipline and control one’s own thoughts and take responsibility for his destiny. Once uncovered and utilized when one hits bottom, self-discipline is the oxygen tank for a desperate soul.
Self-discipline is indeed a muscle. It gains strength as it is used and weakens as it is neglected. It is one of the steps to self-mastery. Without strong self-discipline, it is not possible to reach the pinnacle of even the smallest goal. We all have goals and dreams but sometimes lose sight of them in the comfort of self-indulgence. Doing what feels good now instead of what we committed to for better or worse. These indulgences weaken our resolve and allow us to shrink into mediocrity as if it were an oversized couch; swallowing our will, while at the same time comforting us.
Self-discipline requires a constant awareness of where we are now, and where we want to be. Focus and strength are good companions on this journey. As is the ability to petition for help when we need it.  In other words, pray. I’m not saying ‘pray’ in the sense of religion, but if you are a believer in something greater than yourself, use that to your advantage. I wonder why we use prayer as a last resort instead of the first step in any process. Personally, I just like to invite the greatest advantage to any undertaking and I can’t think of a better place to put my first step than here.
