How To Treat Chapped Lips

As temperatures fall, you may find yourself with one of cold weather’s uncomfortable and unsightly side effects: red, flaky, cracked or peeling lips. Left untreated, the condition can lead to deep cracks, patch peeling and even bleeding. But a little care can give your pucker the power it needs to fend off the dryness. Just follow these steps.

Prevent. The first thing you need to do is curb daily habits that hurt your lips. Licking them dries them out by removing natural moisture. Rubbing them together too frequently can also cause damage, as can behaviors such as nail- and cuticle-biting. Another no-no is salty foods. Cosmetics wearers should avoid matte lipsticks or lip pencils. If you want color, use emollient-based products or tinted balms.

Exfoliate. Next, you’ll need to prep your lips for healing. An important step is removing dead skin so healthy cells underneath can effectively receive hydration. One easy method is to gently brush the lips and surrounding area with a dry baby toothbrush. If your lips are too sensitive for even those extra-soft bristles, begin with a dry washcloth.

Hydrate. Just as your face needs regular moisturizing, so do your lips. Plan to incorporate a balm into your morning and evening skin-care routine. (Coating your lips at night is especially important as your skin will have longer to absorb the balm’s healing properties.) The product you use in the evening can be heavier and more visible than something you would use during the day. When applying, remember you are dealing with traumatized skin so work gently – don’t pull or tug. If your case of chapped lips is particularly painful or persistent, you may want to consult a doctor.

Protect. To keep the elements from attacking your lips as you go about your day, keep a balm on hand for spot applications. This will be lighter than the nighttime product and should include sun protection and a sealant. Reapply after eating or drinking or when lips feel dry. A touch of gloss can add yet another protective coating.
