Acupuncture and Sex

In our fast-paced world, many people worry about their sex lives, whether it be lack of desire or physical performance issues. Either way, acupuncture can help people improve many aspects of their life, including their sex life. This is not to say someone can go back to being a 20-something if they’re in their 60s, nor should they.

When we are young and sex is a new thing, we have a lot more energy and a lot less understanding of other people’s feelings and needs. It is well known that, in relationships, sex is helpful at first to keep people together because of the instant intimacy it creates. However, as we age, we are meant to also become more skilled at communication and caring for others. Later on in life, one would hope we don’t need the glue of hormones to nurture our relationships. In many ways, keeping the focus on the physical only distracts us from working on what really matters… empathy, compassion, and understanding.

Recreating the hormones of youth does not make us better lovers, just more energetic ones. Accepting the changes of our bodies as a natural part of the wizening process of the human spirit is the greatest gift we can give ourselves as we mature. This is not to say we should suffer unnecessarily from symptoms of menopause and andropause, including as night sweats, insomnia, fatigue, and irritability. Acupuncture can be very helpful with these concerns.

But even better, acupuncture also helps put us back into balance and remember our humanity. Not only can it help us on a physical level but, more importantly, it helps us to be more present to our partner and therefore engender those tender feelings that make us want to be intimate with our beloved.
