Acupuncture For Anxiety

Anxiety is the restless apprehension that complicates many illnesses. Some patients who suffer from anxiety may appear acutely ill with dyspnea, hyperhidrosis, exhaustion and fear of personal issues, such as believing death if imminent.

Hysterical symptoms, such as paralysis of a limb, inability to speak, to hear or to see, may be produced by extreme cases of anxiety. Anxiety could even be the cause for peptic ulcer, ulcerative colitis, bronchial asthma, myocardial infection and neurodermatitis.

Anxiety usually accompanies and intensifies pain. Patients complain of nervousness and insomnia, chest pain, increased heart rate, nausea, headaches, stomachache, and many other symptoms. In acupuncture, anxiety may be identified from facial observation, increased blood pressure, heart rate, shortness of breath and weakened immune system. An anxiety patient's general health may be normal until the anxiety conditions proceed to further develop, and may then affect thinking and interfere with daily functioning.

According to clinical observation, anxiety patients who receive acupuncture feel relaxed after treatment. They may have a peace of mind and heart rate and blood pressure may be slightly reduced.

In the last two decades the modern scientific theory behind the effectiveness of acupuncture has developed, particularly the FDA approval of acupuncture needles and the NIH and World Health Organization endorsement of acupuncture in the U.S. Acupuncturists believe the needles stimulate the acupuncture points and meridians and can help our body produce natural chemicals needed by the muscles and relating organs. As a result, the treatment may influence the regulatory system for self-healing.

Although acupuncture may temporarily relieve some of the symptoms for anxiety patients, it should not be considered a substitute for psychotherapy.
