Acupuncture For Eating Disorders

Millions of Americans, young and old, suffer from eating disorders. The most common type of eating disorders are Anorexia Nervosa and Bulimia Nervosa, which are characterized by fasting, excessive exercise, as well as purging in order to have more freedom to eat more food. Binge eating is another disorders, characterized by eating large amounts of food without purging.

Most people understand that improper eating can cause health and medical problems. Both anorexia and bulimia can cause problems with the heart, lungs, stomach, intestines, etc.

The standard treatments for eating disorders include psychological therapies, nutritional counseling, special exercises, as well as certain medical treatments. The patient's commitment and decision to overcome their disorder can be an important factor to determine the treatment outcome. In addition, family support and social activities can have a positive effect.

Acupuncture is a unique healing method to treat eating disorders, which may complement mainstream medical approaches. Acupuncture focuses on relaxation and balancing of Yin and Yang energy in the body. A patient may notice a decrease of anxiety and stress after one initial treatment, however long-term observation and treatment may be necessary.

A recent study was conducted at Victoria University in Melbourne, Australia by Dr. S. Fogarty and his associates. A randomized cross-over study was used in this study. Nine consenting women (5 with Anorexia Nervosa, 4 with Bulimia Nervosa), with an average age of 23.7 years, participated in the study. The outcomes finding shows that acupuncture was very helpful for eating disorders. Although the study was a small trial, it was well designed and followed scientific procedures. The conclusion indicated that acupuncture has a positive impact to help eating disorder patients.
