Acupuncture and Energy

“Can acupuncture help me with my energy?” This is an interesting question. The short answer is, “Yes, it can.” To fully answer, one must know what energy is.

In simplest terms, energy is the force that makes everything happen. It is the “E” in Einstein’s famous equation, E=mc2, which means everything has mass and movement and nothing is ever completely still. This is basic physics, taught in schools all over the world.

In acupuncture terms, energy is very similar to Qi. It is our life force, that which makes our heart beat, our blood move, and our stomach churn (plus everything else that happens). Qi by itself has very little mass, but moves very quickly. There are many pathways of Qi that flow through the body just like water flows through the planet.

It is said Qi flows through the complete circuit of pathways (or meridians) 25 times every 12 hours, for a total of 50 times in a 24-hour period. Just imagine a water molecule, passing through every ocean, sea, river, stream, and inlet; moving around the earth 50 times from sunrise to sunrise and you will get a feeling for how fast Qi moves. Very fast indeed.

Blockages to the flow of water on the earth slows things down, making the water stagnate, and creating floods and dry areas in its path. In a person, blockages to the flow of Qi show up as pain, sluggishness, and discomfort, or disease. Acupuncture smoothes the flow and removes blockages to the Qi, so that this process can take place unimpeded.

When everything is flowing smoothly, we experience ease and comfort, even enthusiasm and joy. And so, when someone asks if acupuncture can help with his or her energy, the answer is yes, because that is precisely what it does.
