Are Your Tresses Summer Ready

Rising temperatures, rainy weather, and humid conditions are the perfect storm for a disastrous hairstyle. Protective styles are at an all time high to protect against the heat, moisture, and sun. Protective styles include braiding, weave installations, wigs, ponytails, crochet braiding or any type of style that covers your hair in whole or in part to protect it from the heat and environment. They have become quite popular during vacations with family, or even during extreme workout routines. Here are some protective styling tips to help you achieve the healthiest outcome for your tresses.

Choose a look that you can manage. Will there be a need to shampoo frequently because you're at the gym three days or more? Lock into a look that will honor the flexibility of regular shampoos and weekly salon maintenance. Scalp maintenance is just as important as hair maintenance. Salt deposits from sweat build up on the scalp when working out or engaging in outdoor activities. The moisture settles in and creates a bacteria. Some characteristics can be identified by dandruff or flakes on the scalp, oily patches covered with flakes, or yellowish scales, it can extend to eyebrows and behind the ears, also may bring itching or stinging. Shampoo often to keep the integrity of the scalp for optimal growing conditions.

Consider the length of time the style is needed. Refrain from allowing your protective styles to go beyond the 4-5 week mark. Bundled hair, braids, and ponytails get heavy over time. The weight of the style will begin to pull and bring stress to your follicles. Give room for your hairline to not undergo too much pressure. Allow a recovery time in between looks. The average head sheds 100-200 hairs per day. When in a protective look, the hair has no where to travel. You can expect excessive shedding in a five-week period. Condition, rest and repeat.

Protection is awesome, but for some it's a nuisance. Many women prefer their natural hair. Even with this path, protection is still key. To eliminate sun damage to your natural hair, use polymers and sealants with UV protection. This will allow maximum protection against the sun and heat and protect permanent colors from fading. Condition frequently to replenish the moisture from chlorinated pool water, and hot drying sun. Refrain from overdrying your hair with mechanical appliances. If blow drying is necessary, allow it to air dry for 30 minutes prior to heat application. Make the investment in quality products that aid in the overall protection of scalp and hair quality. Contact your hair care specialist to discuss your summer looks for an enjoyable hair healthy season.
