Bowel Or Bladder Issues In Children

According to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK), by five years of age, over 90% of children have no daytime bladder control issues. This leaves 10% of children age five and over who are leaking urine during the day. On top of this, 30% of four year olds experience bed-wetting. Another major issue affecting children is constipation, which accounts for nearly 5% of pediatric office visits and can also contribute to urinary leakage and bed-wetting. Children who experience anxiety-causing events may be at an even higher risk of developing urinary incontinence, and in turn, having incontinence causes significant stress and anxiety for children.

These statistics are staggering, as these issues can be devastating for children and families. It is important to note, however, that you and your child are not alone. Millions of children suffer from pelvic floor dysfunction, the inability to control the muscles that allow you to have normal bowel movements and urination, every year. Most do not get the help they need. These very same pelvic muscles are often the culprit in pediatric bowel and bladder disorders.

Pelvic floor physical therapy can be a life changing service to help these children. Physical therapy for pediatric bowel and bladder dysfunction involves one-on-one sessions with specially trained therapists. During these sessions therapists work to empower children to connect to their bodies using manual therapy, biofeedback, behavioral/diet modification, relaxation techniques and stretching/strengthening of pelvic floor and surrounding muscles as appropriate.

As pediatric bladder and bowel dysfunction can persist into adulthood, it is imperative to address these issues as soon as they arise. If your family is ready to stop suffering from issues like urinary incontinence, urinary frequency, constipation, pelvic/abdominal pain, and bed-wetting physical therapy can help.
