Breast Augmentation

Did you wake up this morning and decide to see a plastic surgeon for breast implantation? Most women have thought about their decision for years. Whether it is a feeling of not being proportionate with the rest of their body or difficulty with clothing, every woman has her own reason for wanting larger breasts.

There are many considerations a patient must take into account before deciding which surgeon or which type of surgery to have. There are different ways to do the surgery and each surgeon has their own style. In our office we have coined breast augmentation as the “Bella Breast.”

The process of patient evaluation and surgical technique starts with the consultation. This is when your surgeon should carefully listen to your goals and guide you through the important questions that must be answered to have a breast augmentation.

Size? This is always the most difficult question for patients to answer. The goal is to give patients an enhanced appearance while making the breast appear very natural. We use a two-step process to determine the perfect size.

First, it is important to take several measurements of your breasts. This is important so that not only is the correct size implant selected but the correct style implant. Every woman is unique and the selected implant must match a woman’s breast.

Second, you can try on the breast implants to give you a good idea of what you will look like in clothing with that size implant. You can also be provided with implants to take home to size in the privacy of your home.

Implant Location? Implants can be placed under or over the pectoralis muscles. In general most implants are placed under the muscle as this gives a more natural appearance and greatest fullness in the upper half of the breast.

Incision? There are three options for where the incision will be, 1) Around the areola, 2) The fold of the breast, and, 3) Through the armpit.

Based on a very careful physical exam, each choice will be reviewed with you to reach the best option. Regardless of which incision is chosen, your scar will be approximately 1” and closed with very fine stitches to leave you with the smallest and least noticeable scar possible.

Implant Choice? Patients have a choice between silicone and saline. In October 2006, the FDA re-released silicone implants for primary breast augmentation after 14 years of a careful safety study. In general, silicone implants feel and look more natural compared to saline.

Once these four questions have been answered, you are ready to schedule your surgery. Having an on-site fully equipped and Medicare certified surgery center is a great advantage for the patient. It is an extremely private setting, where you are the only patient and have your own nurse.

Patients typically experience a quick recovery and return to work in 3-4 days, light exercise in 10-14 days and full activity around 3-4 weeks.

As with any surgery, there are risks. Precise surgical technique and using the “Bella Breast” technique, the complication rate can be 100 times lower than the national average.

You only have one opportunity to have a perfect breast augmentation, so consider it carefully.
