Caring For Your Natural Hair

Natural hair versus relaxed hair is a sticky topic for the hair industry. There was a time when African Americans thought relaxing hair was the only way to be socially accepted, but today that is not the case. We are embracing our natural hair and taking charge of these curl patterns. The biggest complaint natural hair stylists hear is about moisture. “How do I get moisture back in my hair, it's so dry?”

Ladies, first understand that needing moisture does not mean to wet your hair every morning in the shower. There are many factors to consider when choosing a good moisturizer for your hair. Your diet, medication, climate and even lifestyle can determine how products react in your hair. But one thing that is consistently effective are steam treatments. Steam treatments help to hydrate the hair. Its different from a deep conditioner because you are receiving moist heat instead of dry heat and that will circulate blood flow and aid hair growth. The steam from a steam treatment will penetrate directly into the shaft of each strand and begin to repair what is damaged.

Some benefits of getting a steam treatment are

Moisture retention. Moisture retention helps you to achieve those perfect looking twist outs. It helps to keep the definition longer so on day two you are not working with a frizzy bush.

Elasticity. We call this the snap back. Steaming your hair regularly will create healthy strong strands of hair. If you are transitioning back to natural this is going to be key for you. The “in between” stage is already difficult, and the demarcation line is weak so building the elasticity back is a major strength.

Opens Cuticle. How many times have you conditioned your hair and when you rinsed the product out you felt like your hair didn't change? Steaming will open the cuticles up so that the products penetrate the hair, leaving the hair manageable and easier to detangle. Please remember when rinsing conditioner, use luke warm to cool water.

At the end of the day caring for your natural hair is work, but it is rewarding work. You will find that treating your hair with steam treatments will make that work easier.
