Natural Approach To Cancer Prevention

There are so many things that can help us fight, or even better, prevent cancer. These are things that are easily included in a healthier lifestyle.

Of the factors that contribute to the development and growth of all types of cancer, there are three different types

1) Internal factors, as in genetic influence or response to infection.

2) External factors, such as unhealthy workplace or home environment.

3) Lifestyle factors, as in diet, smoke exposure, alcohol, or sun burns.

Of these three, the external and lifestyle factors contribute to 80% of preventable cancer deaths in the United States. And, further, these are the things that are the most easily controlled by each of us.

The most basic considerations for being the least vulnerable to cancer include the following natural choices

Nutritionally, it is my opinion that the best overall diet plans for cancer prevention is the Mediterranean, or anti-inflammatory diet. This diet is also described as the longevity diet.

We should include the following foods in our diet for prevention of and for fighting cancer

Try to eat 5 to 7 servings of whole grain food per day.

Eat plenty of cruciferous veggies, like broccoli, brussels sprouts, cabbage, and cauliflower. Eat lots of asparagus and spinach, yellow and orange vegetables, as well as, apples and berries. All the more colorful fruits and vegetables contain pigments that have antioxidants that may help fight cancer.

Consume onions and garlic, even if in pill form.

All nuts are nutritious but raw nuts allow us to avoid the added salt and fat. Walnuts reduce inflammation and almonds contain the anti-carcinogenic agent Laetrile.

Eat tons of tomatoes, especially in season, and tomato based products.

Drink spring, distilled or filtered water.

Limit your dairy products, but a little cheese and yogurt is good.

Green tea is a healthful summer and winter drink.

The following are a few basic lifestyle considerations of which we should all be mindful

Use glass, stainless steel or wooden utensils.

It is a good idea to check the radon level in your home and, of course, avoid exposure to tobacco smoke.

Take medication only when necessary and when prescribed by your doctor.

As much as possible, we should avoid stress. Active exercise and relaxation techniques reduce our bodies stress response.

All these choices will not only make us and our loved ones healthier, but they will make us happier.
