Children’s Safety Comes In Many Colors

As a parent or grandparent, the safety and well being of our children are most important. You purchase the best car seat possible and do everything necessary to protect your children from well-known hazards such as teaching them not to play with matches, staying away from fire, teaching them to look both ways before crossing a street, not talking to strangers and securing other things around the home.

There are, however, other hazards to be concerned about that many parents are simply not aware of. That area concerns the “environmental” health of our children. Why should you be concerned? Let’s look at some statistics.

Childhood asthma affects more than 4.8 million children under the age of 18 across the U.S. It is estimated that nearly 12 million children in the U.S. suffer from one or more learning, developmental, or behavioral disability. “An epidemic of developmental, learning and behavioral disabilities have become evident among children,” according to the Greater Boston Physicians for Social Responsibility and environmental neurotoxins are to blame. While there has been significant developments in the cure rate for cancer in adults, the rate of cancers in children continue to rise.

According to the National Cancer Institute, the rates of childhood cancer associated with environmental exposures have significantly increased. Aside from accidents, cancer now is the number one cause of death of children ages 4-9. Increases in some cancers in adults can be partially attributed to the fact that people are living longer, but increases in very young children can only be due to environmental exposures at a very early, critical stage of development.

So now you may be asking yourself, well, where are these toxic chemicals. They cannot possibly be in my home? According to the World Resources Institute, the 1994 Information Please Environmental Almanac, the typical home today now contains over 60 hazardous products that together contain hundreds of different chemicals. Where did these chemicals come from? Well, since 1950, over 85,000 new synthetic chemicals have been introduced and dispersed throughout our environment in a variety of new consumer products, industrial products and foods – all of which are meant to make our lives easier and cleaner. But, you may ask, what is the ultimate price one pays for this. And, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, it was determined that commercial cleaning products are some of the most dangerous substances in the home. A report by the Commission on Chemicals commonly found in homes has identified that over 150 chemicals have been linked to allergies, birth defects, cancer and psychological abnormalities.

There is hope and hope comes in the form of being an educated consumer. Here are some very informative web sites, which will answer all your questions – www.childenvironment.org and www.chej.org as well as healthychld.com.

Our children may be only 25% of our population, but they are 100% of our future. Let’s all work together to protect our most valuable resource.
