A Street Car Named Desire
No, please dont say car. Christmas is in less then 45 days away, and you want a new car, more jewelry, shoes more stuff. These are some of the things we desire. We desire to have whatever, just give it to us. For some of us it doesnt matter how much money we spend or the debt we accumulate, what matters is fulfilling our desires.
In yoga language (Sanskrit) the word for desire is Sankalpas. Its definition is “one who is tied (bound) to desire.” When desire shows its face, in our mind we only think of the object being desired. While thinking of the desires (wants) we dont always, if ever, think of the outcome for the things desired.
To be bound to your desires is like putting a viper in a basket, which is possible, but only when you figure out how to do it. This results in contemplation and determination, which in turn leads to swadhyaya (a study of self). To study the self is a lot of fun; you get into yourself. Not stuck on your self, but to get into your thoughts and your reasoning. Why do we desire in the first place? Desire comes from the second energy center known as your second chakra (svadhistana). This chakra governs creativity, imagination, partnerships, relationships, emotions, our inner struggles and living with others. The second chakra is our feel good center to include food, sex and stimulants. The things we long for, the things of desire. Things we think will make us happy, things that will satisfy the viper in the basket.
During the holiday season remember, the viper in the basket. It is next to impossible to keep a viper in the basket. You will have to work very hard and constant to keep or to control the viper in the basket.
Credit card charging is the viper in the basket. Spending more than you have to spend is the viper in the basket. You can work to pay your minimum amount due on your credit card, however the balance will slowly decrease and if you have another desire its up again. It will never seem to go away, if and when it does, it is because you have worked long and constant. How is that for desire? Do you desire to stress and worry?
Have a happy, healthy holiday and a prosperous 2010! Sat Nam.
