Lyme Disease and Gu Syndrome: Chinese Medicine

Lyme disease is often referred to as the “great imitator”. It often presents many of the same symptoms as a variety of neurological and rheumatological conditions including: fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, lupus, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s, Lou Gehrig’s (ALS) and Alzheimer’s.

Lyme is considered a “poly microbial” disease — it is a syndrome tied particularly to different strains of Borrelia, but also frequently involves other bacteria, molds, viruses and parasites.

From a Chinese medical perspective gu syndrome is a chronic inflammatory parasitic infection, or a super-infection potentially involving many different pathogens. They can thrive upon each other symbiotically while evading their own death by masterfully creating their own camouflage and hiding from the immune system.

In modern terms, gu syndrome is seen as chronic inflammatory diseases with autoimmune complications.

“Brain gu” encompasses conditions like Lyme disease, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, and certain types of mental diseases caused by pathogens infecting the nervous system, primarily spirochetes or certain types of viruses that can inflame the brain and other parts of the nervous system. This can cause symptoms of varying neurological and physiological symptoms such as: aches and pains like moving body and joint pain, sharp shooting pain or numbness and headaches or migraines, anxiety, depression, insomnia, fatigue, restlessness, compromised mental function, brain fog, emotional volatility, and traumatic fear responses to minor stimuli, i.e. hypersensitivity to smell and noise.

“Digestive gu” is caused by infectious agents that are primarily present in the gut, like certain types of worms, or protozoan parasites, mold or funguses, all of which can coexist and promote each other’s proliferation. The existence and overgrowth of these microbes and endotoxins begin to change and remap the internal gut terrain and systemic microbiome of the body. The brain may not be directly inflamed with digestive gu, but becomes irritated via secondary metabolic pathways because the gut is inflamed.

Using this traditional perspective we are able to offer an effective holistic approach to these debilitating issues. Traditional methods include acupuncture and herbs, to provide a clear, productive and proven treatment approach to reduce inflammation, support the immune system, clear microbial overgrowth and invasion, promote healing and bring the body back into balance by supporting and fortifying the internal microbiome and strengthening the body’s ability to heal from within by making the body’s internal terrain inhospitable to invaders in order to relieve suffering and regain heath and wellness.
