Setting Goals That Will Last Beyond January

Most everyone I know makes “New Year's resolutions.” They usually last 'til about the middle of the month. If your goal is to exercise more and it gets really cold and snowy, it is really easy to skip the workout for the day. Once you skip the workout, you might as well eat an extra dessert while you are at it.

A friend of mine recommended a great book, which I read over the Christmas break. It is called The Slight Edge. The author is Jeff Olson. His premise is that when you look around and you see really productive, successful people and you get curious about how they got that way, you usually find out that it is not one big thing they did. Some of the richest people in America are self-made millionaires in rather mundane businesses. They got that way by doing the little things each and every day.

Olson says that the reason it is hard to keep going when you are doing the little things is that you do not see “success” for a long time. Wouldn't it be great if you could knock out sweets for three days and lose 15 pounds? Truth is, you do not. If you want to lose 10 pounds in four months, you do it by losing 1.33 ounces a day. That hardly shows up on my scale. Successful people just get a lot accomplished in a day. If you followed them around for a week, you would have to say to yourself, “it is no wonder he is so successful; look at all he gets done.”

So, how do you do it? How do you keep going and doing the little things over and over again without immediate positive feedback? I have found that the answer to that question is that you need to be in a group of committed individuals. I call it a mastermind group. You need to hang out with success-minded people who will continually help you stay on track. Do you want to get better? Hang out with people who do things bigger, better and faster than you do.

In keeping with this month's theme at Your Health Magazine, think about the little changes you can make in your day-to-day life that will help prevent heart disease, stroke, and diabetes. What little, daily, repeated-over-a-long-time change could you make that will make you a healthier individual? Start today, be patient, and watch the results.
