Springtime and Yoga

Spring is here. We have made it through the winter. We didn’t have much of a winter really, compared to some of the other states.

Spring is a time for new beginnings. When we leave our homes in the mornings in springtime the birds always sing to us. They say things to us like “pretty, pretty, pretty.” We should say thank you to these sweet birds. After the birds sing to you and tell you that you are pretty, you begin to feel pretty.

Smell the roses, honeysuckles, hyacinth, fresh cut grass and the smell of rain if it is in the air. Take notice of the little kittens popping up in the neighborhood, bird nests and little bird egg shells that have fallen to the ground. Watch the cocoons and the caterpillars that will soon turn into beautiful butterflies. We can be like the butterflies too, and turn into a more loving, caring, and honest individual. The birds and the bees give us love and beauty, and we should give that to others.

The birds and the bees buzzing around in the springtime are telling us to get ready for the summer. To come out and buzz and flutter around town and go to the museums, picnic in the parks, summer outdoor concerts, festivals, crab feasts and more. It is time to smell and eat good fresh foods and drink summer drinks like good ole fashioned ice tea with mint.

Spring is the time for hay fever and sinusitis. You would like to smell the roses, but it’s hard to when your eyes begin to water and you start sneezing uncontrollably. Your nasal passages may become clogged up and you can’t smell a thing. You wish you could, but you can’t.

According to Ayurveda and yoga, it seems that the body constitution of kapha (dosha body type) is more prone to sinusitis, bronchitis, tonsillitis and congestion in the lungs. In the kapha type constitution sinusitis can also occur through possessiveness, greed and attachment.

According to Ayurveda (the science of self-healing), for sinusitis you could consider applying a ginger paste to the affected area or inhaling one pinch of calamus root powder. Calamus root is a hot and penetrating herb and it is used as an expectorant. It is also an emetic. The root, when used as a powder can be taken into the nose like snuff to relieve sinus congestion and sinus headaches. The calamus root causes you to sneeze. Sneezing will then open up the respiratory tract.

You can also consider neti nasal cleaning. Clean your nasal passage with a sea salt solution to rinse out the mucus directly from the nose and throat. Neti is a fast and convenient process for cleaning the nasal passage and to get instant relief from the blocked passageways.

Springtime is here and summer is on the way. Can you come out and play?

Namaste.
