Cool Minds Prevail In Even Cooler Weather

Senior living communities have evolved – there’s no doubt about it. The dining is fabulous, the social activities are endless, and the aesthetic of the properties are second to none. But, what about the apartments or villas themselves? Daily chores that were once easy, like vacuuming and washing windows, can now agitate the body and put an enormous amount of unnecessary stress on one’s physical and mental health. Especially in the winter months when snow removal is required.

This winter has been especially harsh for our area, with temperatures dipping lower, wind chill having an even larger effect, and freezes lingering for weeks instead of days. All of that maintenance is strenuous and can exhaust even the most seasoned veterans of winter weather. Not only does all that maintenance strain muscles, but it has an effect on mental health as well. It is imperative that seniors take care of themselves, especially during the winter months, when the “winter blues” can turn into Seasonal Affective Disorder if not tended to.

There are lots of things one can do to engage the mind and body without putting unnecessary stress on themselves. Read a great book, increase social interactions with friends and family by hosting or attending a party, and stay active with exciting fitness programs that are still low impact. These are the years to enjoy your life every day, regardless of the weather, and maintaining your house or yard should not be an impediment to any of the hard-earned satisfaction that being a senior should entail.

Relaxation at home can be greatly underestimated in today’s fast-paced environment, but it is all the more important for those of us who are aging and increasingly focusing on our health. It is the key to consistent health, with numerous benefits including:

  • Lowering your heart rate
  • Stabilizing blood pressure and breathing rate
  • Reducing muscle tension and chronic pain
  • Improving concentration and mood
  • Decreasing fatigue
  • Relieving anger and frustration
  • Boosting confidence to handle problems

Winter has always been a season full of surprises. The jubilance of the holiday season comes and goes, and is replaced with the harshness of busy schedules, never ending chores, and unpredictable weather. Any good senior living community will offer housekeeping and maintenance, but the best ones are elevating their lifestyle programs even more, to not only offer these services – but include then without any additional fees. If you think about it, it really makes sense and should be a no-brainer across the board. A relaxed individual has more time to enjoy the amenities that modern senior living communities offer, and after all, isn’t that the point?
