COVID Vaccines and Treatments
May Be Hailed One of the Greatest Scientific Accomplishments of All Time
As we look down the long dark tunnel of COVID-19 are we now beginning to see a light at the end of that tunnel?
The coronavirus has been a horrible experience for this country, and the world. So much sickness and death. So much life interruption and restrictions on almost everything “normal”. It has been a tumultuous year to say the very least. It has brought people to tears as they have watched as friends and loved ones have succumbed to the disease or the lingering side effects.
Just the site of vacant city streets, restaurants and stores shutdown has been gut-wrenching. One person who works for Sysco went downtown and broke down in tears as she witnessed the carnage on restaurants and the food industry first hand.
Loved ones who have not seen each other in more than a year, reach down to find the strength to go forward.
The COVID crisis has brought so much stress to everyone, even the healthy and employed, that a cardiologist reports that the whole country has high blood pressure because of it. Otherwise healthy people feel it, even if they haven’t caught the virus. The whole thing can just make you plane sick!
But, now we are seeing something different. The hope and excitement normally associated with Spring is happening coincidentally with a drop in COVID cases, hospitalizations and deaths.
Thanks to the government, industry and scientists, we have achieved the vaccines that everyone knows about. As of today, over 100 million vaccines have been distributed in the U.S. alone. At a pace of over 2 million doses per day, it is possible to imagine everyone in this country getting vaccinated in the next few months.
That is only part of it, too. The medications that have been developed have helped tremendously to treat virus patients, reducing symptoms and deaths. New medications are still coming online. First-stage testing of the experimental COVID-19 pill called Molnupiravir, by Merck and Ridgeback Biotherapeutics, showed promising signs of effectiveness in reducing the virus in patients.
It has been a horrible time for so many people, but if you understand anything about viruses, sub-cellular science, vaccines and viral treatments, you have to recognize that what has been accomplished in dealing with this horrible contagion is incredible. Never in human history has the collective knowledge of mankind cooperated to develop vaccines and treatments the way they have in response to COVID-19. It truly may prove to be one of the greatest, if not the greatest, feats of science of all time.
Now, people are beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel, just as the excitement of Spring is in the air. It is so hopeful it is bringing joy to the point of people tearing up.
We still need to be careful, but virtually all signs point in a positive direction. Stay vigil and we may actually see the end to this pandemic sooner than later.
