Do You Really Have Enough Car Insurance?

The tragic death of a Catholic nun who was hit by a drunk driver in Prince William County in early August serves to remind our readers of the importance of buying enough car insurance.

As you probably remember, an illegal alien who had already been convicted of drunk driving and was awaiting deportation allegedly got drunk again and hit a car carrying the Benedictine nuns to a conference. Two of the nuns are still in critical condition and the medical bills will be huge.

This is tragic and, unfortunately, could happen to any innocent person or family. The question you need to think about is Do you think the drunk driver had purchased lots of car insurance to protect anyone he injured?

Probably not. If he had any insurance at all, he probably had the minimum coverage of $25,000 per person, $50,000 per accident. Obviously, that will not even begin to cover the damage or the bills.

Unfortunately, there are a lot of people driving around with little or no insurance in Virginia. Did you know, it's actually legal to drive with no car insurance in Virginia you just have to pay a small fee to the DMV and register your car as “uninsured.”

The good news is that you can protect your family more fully through the purchase of an adequate amount of “uninsured/underinsured motorist insurance.” You can typically buy up to $1,000,000 of coverage from your own insurance company. More good news is that this type of coverage is pretty cheap. The additional premium for increasing your own protection to $1,000,000 is generally a couple hundred dollars a year.

Some things to remember

Your insurance company may balk at selling you $1,000,000 of coverage. If this happens, ask to speak to a supervisor or try a different company.

They may suggest that you buy an “umbrella policy” instead. You should buy an umbrella policy to protect your assets in case you are sued, but you should be aware that most umbrella policies sold in Virginia do not include uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage.

While you may have health insurance to cover most of your medical bills, in most cases your own health insurance company will want to be reimbursed if you make a recovery for a car accident. Thus, if you don't have enough insurance, all of the money you recover after an accident may go right back to the health insurance company.

Take a moment to call your insurance agent today. Ask them to price out coverage for uninsured/underinsured motorists to the maximum you can buy from them. Your family will thank you for it should such a tragic accident happen.
