Botox has now overtaken Viagra to become the most publicly recognized medical treatment. Now there are also three new treatments to safely smooth out your wrinkles. Dysport works like Botox but sometimes a little faster, Xeomin is a purified form of Botox, and Jeuveau is the newest addition for 2019. Consult an expert board certified dermatologist or plastic surgeon to find out if these muscle-relaxing neuromodulator treatments are right for you.
Here are some key principles that I use when teaching plastic surgeons and dermatologists nationally and internationally about Botox, Dysport, Xeomin and Jeuveau. These principles, based on my experience as a researcher for these treatments, and my publications in medical journals, are useful for both men and women who are considering having treatment.
First, understand the science. As we age, some of our facial muscles become overactive, causing “hyperdynamic” wrinkles between the eyebrows, on the forehead and neck, and around the eyes and mouth. Aging of our muscles also contributes to a double chin. Tiny amounts of Botox, Dysport, Xeomin or Jeuveau can be gently injected just beneath the skin to relax and re-balance overactive muscles, giving a smoother, younger appearance. For the best results, this must be done with in-depth understanding of facial anatomy.
Botox, Dysport and Xeomin have been extensively studied. A select group of dermatologists and plastics surgeons have served as FDA Principal Investigators for these studies. The studies have shown that these treatments are safe and effective, and led to their FDA-approval for treatment of frown lines, forehead lines and/or crow’s feet.
Next-generation scientific publications, research and education are being done to advance our knowledge. Besides their use for no downtime wrinkle-relaxing, Botox, Dysport and Xeomin are used safely for numerous medical conditions, including lazy eye in children and excessive sweating.
Second, see the whole picture. When you receive advanced Botox, Dysport, Xeomin or Jeuveau treatment from an expert, it doesn’t just smooth frown lines but can even re-shape your face to restore youthful contours, making you look years younger.
For instance, if your eyebrows have dropped and flattened, making your eyelids heavier, a little treatment in the right places will make you look and feel much better by lifting and subtly arching your brows, which adds definition and sparkle to your eyes. A drooping mouth or neck can be similarly lifted.
Ironically, some celebrities who are criticized for being “over-Botoxed” are really victims of over-zealous surgery, whereas many who are most admired for their beauty have regular, expert treatments. Expertly performed treatment makes you look better and younger but is undetectable.
Third, remember the power of combining treatments. One of the newest concepts is combining natural fillers such as Juvederm, Voluma, Vollure, Volbella, Restylane, Radiesse, Belotero and Sculptra, and state-of-the-art lasers such as Ulthera, Exilis, Fraxel, CO2RE or eMatrix/eTwo with Botox, Dysport, Xeomin or Jeuveau. The key is for these combinations to be completely individualized to your face. This can achieve a scar-free, non-surgical facelift that prevents you from ever having to go under the knife.
Advanced techniques give natural lift and rejuvenation, and your skin is stimulated to produce its own collagen, which lifts and tightens it from within to give longer-lasting results.
Fourth, keep in mind that many of these treatments require maintenance. This is a good thing as it allows treatments to be adjusted to fit your face as you age. This allows you to always look completely natural, and you may even be told that you never seem to age. Maintenance treatment not only smooths out your wrinkles – it also prevents them from deepening.
Finally, for the best results, select a board certified dermatologist or plastic surgeon who has years of experience with these treatments and understands how to treat your whole face and neck, not just your frown lines. The American Board of Medical Specialties recognizes dermatologists, plastic surgeons, facial plastic surgeons and oculoplastic surgeons as the “core four” specialties that are qualified through their training and knowledge to be performing cosmetic procedures. They have decades of training and expertise in safety and excellence.
When comparing pricing, make sure you know the concentration or dilution of the treatment. Cheap pricing can mean diluted treatment. This is a false economy as it may cost less in the short term but will cost more in the long term, because you won’t get as good results, and will need more frequent re-treatments.
Most importantly of all, choose an expert dermatologist or plastic surgeon who can individualize your treatment to address your own unique aging pattern. The most expert doctors are often actively involved in cutting-edge teaching, research and public education. They are invited to teach and share their expertise with their colleagues at plastic surgery and dermatology academy meetings. And they understand how to always keep you looking completely natural, never “frozen”, and with your full range of facial expressions.
