Get the Stress Out Of Here

Stress. In today’s society it seems like you can’t get away from it. Or is it a lifestyle that we have chosen? Stress has been the root cause of so many diseases that it almost seems an epidemic. More than ever, people are getting cracked teeth due to excessive grinding or rampant cavities due to the ever-growing consumption of sugar, carbonated beverages, and alcohol. Not to mention the consumption of processed foods. It seems as though everyone is on the go but not quite sure where they’re going.

We have become so “busy” that instead of catching up with friends over a meal, we are browsing their social media pages. Our sympathetic nervous is always on which causes your body to be in a chronic “flight or fight” mode releasing unwanted hormones, emotions, and physical fatigue. The result of this is increasing the consumption of alcohol to numb the pain or escape the situation temporarily.  Your teeth and gums are the first victims to this lifestyle because it causes sensitive teeth, bleeding gums, and halitosis due to dehydration.

The time to start taking care of yourself is now, not when you’ve retired or when you have “more” time. Your mind, body, and soul make up who you are as a whole and need constant and consistent attention and care.

Usually diseases or illnesses don’t occur randomly but are the result of a consistent pattern of lack of self-care and awareness. Next time you feel as though time is going by too fast or you’re coming down with something take a breath, focus on yourself, and really be honest with how you are feeling and acknowledge that.

When you’re feeling overwhelmed take a step back and see how you can combat the issue better. Involve your community and don’t be afraid to ask for help. As human beings, we are wired to need each other’s support.

However, the most important thing you can do for yourself is making time for yourself. Make sure you are getting the right nutrients, hydration, and emotional support.  Lastly, make sure you are getting routine physical checks and blood work as well as dental and vision exams to make sure you are ready to take on the day with your best physical self.
