Herbal Support For Lyme Disease

Lyme Disease is a complex and potentially chronic illness that is caused by a bite from an infected tick. Incidences of Lyme Disease are on the rise, and some patients can suffer with debilitating side effects for the rest of their lives. This article will address easing lingering symptoms with supportive herbs.

Joint Pain

Pain in the joints and muscles may range from the mild pain, to severe swelling of the joints, with stiffness and extreme pain. Turmeric is an Aryuvedic herb used for centuries to address joint and muscle pain and liver disorders. This bright yellow herb is antioxidant rich and anti-inflammatory. It helps blood circulation and was traditionally used by yogis to ease soreness and flexibility in doing yoga. Ginger has a similar effect on the muscles and joints, particularly if it is worse in cold weather. Other helpful herbs for this condition may include Chinese red salvia, ashwaganda, white peony, particularly if muscle spasms are a problem as well, green tea, and grape seed extract.

Fatigue

Herbal tonics, or adaptogens, strengthen overall resistance, give energy without a stimulating effect, and tonify the immune system. Adaptogens literally help the body to adapt to stressors, whether they are internal or external. They are gentle herbs, intended for long-term use. Examples of adaptogens include ashwagandha, Siberian ginseng, reishi mushroom, astragalus, and shizandra fruit.

Brain Fog

Lack of focus, and lapses in memory are common symptoms of Lyme, especially if the disease becomes chronic. Proper sleep habits, and good nutrition, will do a lot to alleviate this symptom and all of the above mentioned. Green tea, bacopa, rosemary and basil, and gotu kola are specific herbs for strengthening brain function if sleep and dietary changes alone do not help sufficiently.

Lyme Disease in the early stages needs to be treated with antibiotics. However, for lingering symptoms herbs will help to strengthen the body's resistance and overall vitality, leading to a greater quality of life.
