Improve Your Golf Game With Chiropractic

Every spring, people wonder how they can improve their golf game for the season. Professional and amateur golfers turn to chiropractic care for maintaining health on and off the course and achieving the best possible performance. Professional golfers including Tiger Woods, David Duval, and Padraig Harrington are just a few of the professional golfers who rely upon chiropractors.

Injuries. The most common injuries for golfers are strains and sprains in the lower back and neck, and tendonitis affecting the wrists and forearms due to repetitive action and overuse.

Golf Mechanics. Golfers, by the nature of the game, develop asymmetrical conditions. The repetitive nature of the swing makes it critical that the muscles are at ease so the joints of the spine can move smoothly. Avid golfers do a lot of twisting in order to generate torque, which helps them hit the ball harder.

The problems is that this twisting, combined with being in a bent posture repeatedly can be a recipe for lower back problems. The lack of mobility in the ankles, hips, thoracic spine and shoulders of many golfers forces the lower back to carry excessive loads.

When the spine develops or stores tension, the tissues around the spine can become more rigid, spastic and less flexible. This will lead to changes in range of motion as well as posture. When you realign the spine that rigidity and tension decreases and allows you to perform at your best on a consistent basis. Chiropractic care can help to restore balance and improve your performance.

A Few Good Tips

Stretching is just as important for golf as it is for any other activity. Make sure to stretch out lightly before and after the game. This will help your flexibility, which will in turn help your game and also help you to avoid injury.

Learn proper technique. Invest in lessons. Learning proper technique is critical to not only your score, but your health as well.

Don't carry your bag. Caddy or pull instead of carrying your golf bag. The average golf bag with clubs weighs 35 lbs. and carrying your bag 18 holes can be hard on your back!

Recovery Techniques after a round of golf. Recovery techniques help reduce inflammation, restore normative motor control and repair muscle and joint damage sustained during the round. Effective recovery techniques include hot and cold therapy, massage, nutritional support, sleep, and stretching.

Don't ignore the pain. The back pain experienced by many golfers is merely a warning sign of an underlying problem. It may be an overuse injury or a repetitive injury, but if it's not treated it will only continue to get worse. Our chiropractors can help by finding the underlying cause of your pain and help you to get it straightened out at its source and keep you in the game.

If you are suffering from an injury or want to improve your golf game, call a chiropractor.
