New Virginia DUI Policy

Virginia is enforcing a new regulation that cracks down on drunk driving. First-timers will now face a tougher penalty the installation of ignition interlock devices. Don't know what the device is or does?

Essentially, an ignition interlock device is a breathalyzer test attached to your vehicle's ignition system which prevents you from starting your car if you fail the breath test. Additionally, the system will require “rolling tests” that occur while the vehicle is in use, requiring the driver to blow into the system again within a number of minutes in order to keep the vehicle in motion.

To top it off, the expense for a standard six-month installation of the device comes to $480. This is all in the hope of reducing repeat offenders and preventing overall instances of drunk driving. They want people to think more about the consequences, not only to others, but to themselves, before they get behind the wheel after an evening at the bar.

Concerns that have been raised over the law include the potential of an increased number of DUI cases going to trial and that the penalty is too severe. Previously, only repeat offenders and first-timers with a blood-alcohol level of 0.15 or higher were required to install the device.

The issue here seems to come down to the many thousands of people who are arrested for DUI infractions each year. Frankly, having any number of people driving drunk is an extremely dangerous situation, so a measure designed to prevent this behavior can help make our roads safer. Of course, there's an easy solution to keep from having to install one of these devices in your car Don't Drive Drunk! Get a friend to be your designated driver or just call a cab. You'll be saving your life, the lives of others, and the embarrassment of installing a breathalyzer in your vehicle.
