"We Are the Best Law Firm In Town"
Crazy headline, right? It's a ridiculous claim. Yet, when you think about it, most lawyer advertising provides little or no useful information for a consumer. When you're searching for an attorney, there are five important steps you should take when evaluating the person who will guide you through the difficult legal process.
First, you want to go to an attorney's website and look at their past verdicts and settlements. Look for cases that are similar to your own and for a depth of experience from the attorney. This kind of information is closely monitored by local and state bar organizations, so they should give you an accurate portrayal of that attorney's success.
Second, not every state has a board certification, but if they do, this information may help you decide. You can also look for national board certification. Think about it this way board certification gives you more information about the lawyer than if they weren't board certified.
Third, check out the objective lawyer-rating sites, such as AVVO.com, BestLawyers.com, and SuperLawyers.com. You'll be able to see a mix of reviews from both the attorney's past clients and his or her peers. This can give you a good idea as to the attorney's overall reputation with his clients and in the greater legal community.
Fourth, you should look for an attorney who has literally written the book on his or her practice area. A good attorney will be happy to send you free information about your case so that you can make smart, informed decisions. Also, check to see if the attorney has been asked to appear on television or speak on the radio, since that is a good indication of his or her expert credentials.
Fifth and finally, do a search for the attorney on the Internet. You may find them on sites like Yahoo, Google or YouTube. This step is something that consumers are doing more and more, and it is an excellent way to get a better feel for the attorney. Look for someone who is answering questions and providing free information in videos so you can evaluate the attorney in a “live” format and get a better look at his or her personality.
Ultimately, selecting an attorney to handle your case is a process not to be taken lightly. Your attorney may be with you for many months, or even years, before you receive a settlement or verdict. Spending a few hours or days to find the right person now can save you countless months of grief in the future.
