Liposuction: Does It Make You Skinny?

The answer is yes, and best described in the words of Luxxery Medical Boutique plastic surgeon Dr. Ayman Hakki:

“Liposuction makes you skinny. With 33 years of surgical experience under my belt, along with the collaboration of physicians specializing in metabolic troubles, I can definitively say that liposuction makes you skinny.”

The average amount of fat removed during one session of liposuction is 4-5 liters in volume. Converted to pounds, this is equivalent to 8-11 pounds. Placed on a scale, the aspirated fat does not weigh much, yet translates to greater weight loss in areas of concern. Most patients lose a drastic amount of weight after liposuction.

Dr. Hakki closely watched his best liposuction patients for two years after their procedures, and realized that although his patients pick up a bit of weight immediately after their surgery due to post-operative edema, the weight loss starts to appear at around three months after liposuction.

Maximal results are usually obtained at six months to a year after surgery. This weight loss is not linked to drastic dieting after surgery, though it is necessary that patients respect a certain number of diet regimens. The weight loss is attributed to a number of factors:

The metabolic factor: Human fat or adipose tissue contains a number of hormones such as estrogen and cortisol. This tissue favors resistance to insulin, which is necessary for the elimination of sugar and creates inflammation. When the fat is removed from multiple areas in the body via liposuction, the fat mass is reduced and the hormonal dilution and insulin rate is diminished. This reduction in insulin secretion leads to a reduction in water retention, and a diminished appetite. It also leads to a positive mood change and improved sleep (lack of sleep increases the feeling of hunger and deregulates hormones) while also improving thyroid levels.

The psychological factor: In the hands of a seasoned expert surgeon, liposuction results in a visible modification of a patient’s silhouette. This becomes noticeable a month after surgery. Dr. Hakki’s patients often tell him that they went down a full size smaller in clothes post-surgery, and feel good about their bodies. This improvement in self-esteem is an essential factor to the success of liposuction because it facilitates the commitment to a lifestyle of proper dieting and exercise necessary for the pursuit of fitness.

It is with ease and certainty that Dr. Hakki says liposuction is a booster to triggering weight loss today.

This is best seen in cases where he performs liposuction on multiple areas during one operative session. Within six months to a year and following a multidisciplinary approach, his patient’s results are considered a definitive success. Dr. Hakki’s patients have invested in a new wardrobe for a smaller, skinnier body. Shouldn’t you?

Liposuction Surgery Checklist

Make sure you are a candidate for liposuction

Make sure you don’t have a medical condition that could interfere with your healing process after liposuction

Make sure you don’t take any medication that could increase your risks for complications post-surgery (this includes herbal supplements or over-the-counter medicines)

Make sure you can afford the cost of liposuction

Make sure you are not considering liposuction as your only weight loss method. Liposuction is not a way to lose weight. If your goal is to lose weight consider changing your diet and adhere to an exercise regimen

Make sure you understand the risks and complications that accompany any surgery, including those from liposuction – and if you don’t, ask Dr. Hakki’s team

Make sure you have the proper expectations of your results and the outcome of your surgery

Make sure to have a list of questions on liposuction, be informed about the procedure and have your surgeon address each question

Make sure to read and understand your consent form, take a copy home with you if you must

Have a medical examination and a history and physical prior to your liposuction and make sure you have a clean bill of health

Make sure to have a driver and care giver on the day of your surgery

Make sure you can afford to have the necessary time off to recover, approximately one week to 10 days post surgery
