Nutrition and Adult Acne

In the Washington DC Metropolitan area, we see many patients who have moved here from all over the world. The multinational character of this area gives people a chance to meet, know and see people from different countries. And, people who have been used to different types of food and diets.

In many countries the diet is more natural with a variety of rice, vegetables, and meat. And, adult patients from some countries and cultures have beautiful and blemish-free skin before moving to the U.S. But, after moving stateside, this same diet causes a calamity of breakouts in many.

There is some evidence that the amount of processed foods in the US may have something to do with that. Many people believe that “factory” produced meat and poultry can cause health problems such as acne.

In many countries, factory farming is nonexistent. Even in this century, farmers herd cattle out to pasture to graze on the land and herd them back when they have had their fill. However, in the US, demand for meat has made this modality of simple farming almost impossible. Factory farming produces greater amounts of food with greater about efficiency, which generally makes it more available and affordable for most people.

And although they look the same in the store, processed food, such as poultry and meat, may have an effect on our skin in a number of ways, and one of those ways may be acne in adults.

From what we see in America, acne is no longer a condition limited to the puberty population. We are seeing more and more adults with acneic skin requiring stronger peals, micro needling and laser treatments.

There are different types of acne with different causes. Clogged pores can result in “blackheads” (open pores) or “whiteheads” (closed pores), and both of these can be extracted by a technician.

Certain bacteria can cause inflammatory acne that can, in some cases, become painful and leave scars if left untreated.

For prevention of acne, and preventing existing acne from getting worse, patients need the right treatments done and prescription strength skin care they can use at home.

If you are concerned about acne, visiting a med-spa that treats acne may be a great choice.
