Moving Through Discomforts

The body is a well-used machine that needs regular maintenance for various cramps, creaks, aches, pains, imbalances and system challenges. From a therapeutic exercise standpoint, regular maintenance should include ingesting water daily (speak to a physician or a registered dietician for proper water intake amounts), eating natural foods that support a healthy immune system, choosing healthy environments and last but certainly not least, participating in regular physical activity 3-5 days per week.

Not sure how to start exercising regularly? If you have moderate to severe pain, you can begin exercising with a physical therapist. If you have no pain or light discomforts, you can begin exercising with an exercise physiologist.

Regular physical activity is sometimes uncomfortable and in some cases very painful. It is important to take extra care and effort in tending to unpleasant sensations. Doing this provides a better understanding of “What exactly am I feeling?,” an increase in natural endorphins and pain relievers made by the body, awareness of how the pain may change, and what the pains are trying to communicate to you.

Some unpleasant sensations during exercises such as strengthening or stretching, may be communicating many different messages. For example, these sensations could communicate that you need more or less stretching, to rest and restore whether mentally or physically, to improve strength, more focus on specific action or movement, hands on therapeutic techniques, to improve endurance, to possibly slow down, and even to breathe more.

So, take your time. Use physical activity for regular maintenance for the body's systems and also to help communicate and move carefully through the various unpleasant sensations you may be living with day to day. The unpleasant sensations are messengers communicating where and maybe how the body needs attention and care. All of this being said, the important detail to remember is that regular physical activity can assist in the body's progress, even when dealing with unpleasant sensations.
