Physical Therapy and Exercise

Exercising in a warm pool is one of the main recommendations for people with fibromyalgia or for those who suffer from chronic pain. The warmth of the pool helps relax the muscles and decreases the compression and stress on the joints, making exercise more comfortable. At La Plata Physical Therapy our aquatic therapy pool has an in-ground treadmill with cameras allowing patients to perform anything from a slow walk, up to running against the resistance of jets. The temperature is usually maintained around 98 degrees and is very therapeutic for relieving pain.

After recovery from an episode of back pain, it is important for the patient to continue with the exercises they have been taught by their therapist and continue building up their core muscles to hopefully prevent another episode of pain.

Often the most challenging part of an exercise program is commitment and follow through. Our wellness program is designed so that at the initial assessment the client is asked to commit to a certain number of times each week with appointments set up accordingly.

Exercise has many benefits, especially for those who have diabetes, elevated blood pressure, or those who battle with their weight. Patients who exercise have success with weight loss and decreased blood sugar levels.

Additionally, exercise programs are recommended for patients who are preparing for joint replacements to maintain as much strength and movement as possible prior to surgery. Clients are encouraged to follow up with a wellness program after completion of physical therapy to continue with rehab.

For those who are unable to participate in a structured exercise program, we recommend taking simple steps to increase your exercise level. If the weather is bad, staying indoors is safer. Even inside you can walk around your house, go up and down stairs, and do simple activities such as stand up and sit down from your chair.

Keep moving, and keep healthy.
