Respite Services To Aide Caregivers

As we age, there are multiple options available when the need for additional care arises, ranging from residential care facilities to in-home care services. For those that choose to “age in place” in familiar surroundings, either in their own home or in the home of a loved one, family members often play a key role in the day-to-day care of an aging person.

Many family caregivers are finding themselves “sandwiched” between caring for their school-aged children and their aging parents simultaneously, while maintaining work, home and school schedules. When the needs of an aging loved one progress and there are increased issues with mobility, performing routine activities of daily living such as bathing, dressing and toileting, meal preparation and medication management, it's no wonder that many family caregivers find themselves overwhelmed, frazzled and on the verge of burnout especially when dementia and other cognitive impairments are a factor.

It is important for family caregivers to remember that to be at their best for their loved ones and especially themselves it is essential that they take care of their own physical and mental well-being. Many family caregivers find relief in respite services periods of temporary care for their loved ones which allow them time to have a break for rest and rejuvenation, or to simply run a few personal errands. Respite services are available in many forms and can be customized to meet a caregiver's and/or a patient's individual needs. Some respite services span several days or weeks while family caregivers are out of town on vacation especially if taking an aging loved one on a summer vacation isn't in their or your best interest others are utilized for just a few hours each day or week. Additionally, respite can be provided in the home by home care organizations or in long-term care or assisted living facilities, depending on the desired services and time frame.

Seeking respite care and entrusting the care of your loved one to a professional in-home care provider or a care facility can be daunting; however, if you find one that you trust and one that meets the needs of your loved one with great skill and compassion, you may find it a valuable tool and coping mechanism when caring for your loved one. Additionally, seeking help in caring for your loved one will provide you with a break and time to do things you enjoy so that you can live your best life. Remember, to best care for others, we must always take good care of ourselves.
