Transitioning Skin Care For Cooler Temperatures

In case you haven’t been tipped off by everything pumpkin spice and peppermint mocha, this is your notification that the cool season has officially arrived. And a change in seasons means a change in skin care. Just like nature, your skin adjusts to the fall weather and the environment.

Here are some tips for transitioning your skin care regimen from the warmer months to fall and winter for optimum results.

Evaluate Your Cleanser

If your skin tends toward dry, you may want to think about switching to a more nourishing and moisturizing cleanser as fall’s cooler temps pull more moisture from the skin. Look for milky and cream based cleansers.

Bring Back the Moisturizer

The humidity of summer often means sufficient moisture in the skin. If you cut back on the moisturizer during the summer to compensate, now would be a good time to reintroduce some replenishment.

Take On Trouble Spots

After a season of sun, you may be noticing some new dark spots forming on your skin. This is the melanin in your skin reacting to UV exposure.

To make matters worse, cell turnover is slower in aging skin, so photodamage becomes more apparent. Try products with safe pigment suppressors like Kojic acid, licorice extract and vitamin C can help even out skin tone.

Step Up the Exfoliation

Exfoliation is essential to keeping skin looking bright and youthful any time of year, but especially now. Skin that’s been subject to sunscreen, sweat, and excess oil all summer long, may have caused an accumulation of dead skin cells and debris, giving your complexion a dull appearance. Just make sure to be gentle. Over exfoliation can backfire and cause irritation and further buildup.

Get an Antioxidant Boost

Antioxidants provide a protective shield against free radical damage caused by exposure to sun and pollution. Protect from damaging UV and environmental stressors, and promote regeneration of healthier, glowing skin. Look for serums with vitamin C, and collagen boosting peptides.

Try On a Mask

Before the stress of the holidays sets in, work in a weekly restorative and hydrating mask to optimize skin’s tone and texture.

Don’t Discount the Sun

Summer may be over, but the sun is still out. Sun protection worn under your makeup or on its own should be part of your daily routine to protect skin from sneaky photodamage that can happen even when you’re just out running errands or on your way to work. Remember that deeply penetrating UVA rays are not stopped by glass, so even in your car, you’re exposed.

Cooler weather doesn’t have to mean dry, dull skin. Tweak your routine to repair summer’s excesses and keep pace with your skin’s responses to seasonal changes, and you’ll keep your glow all season long.
