Advanced Laser Therapy For TMJ Pain/Dysfunction

The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is one of the jaw’s joints which connects the lower jawbone to the upper temporal bone of the skull (cranium). TMJ disorders can cause a tremendous amount of pain, which can be debilitating and cause interference with our day-to-day functions.

Over 10 million Americans are plagued with chronic TMJ pain, and exhibit symptoms such as ear pain, headaches, neck aches, jaw pain and soreness. Moreover, our daily lives will be negatively affected because of jaw pain when chewing, limited opening of the mouth, clicking and popping of the jaw and teeth sensitivity. The causes of TMJ pain can be attributed to arthritis, misaligned bite, jaw dislocation or injury, stress and grinding/clenching of teeth.

What are my options
for TMJ relief?

There are several methods that have been used to control TMJ pain such as: occlusal therapies, surgeries, pain killers, injections, physical therapy, massages, etc. Unfortunately, these methods do not always resolve the pain. Until recently, there was little to be done for immediate TMJ relief. However, laser therapy is now offered to provide an innovative treatment, which utilizes the latest technology available to help patients overcome the TMJ dysfunction.

Laser Technology

Laser technology has been so advanced, it is now possible to help patients relieve their temporomandibular joint pain. The laser uses a distinctive light wavelength that penetrates deep into the inflamed muscles and targets the joint itself. This laser-assisted procedure helps increase the blood flow to the affected area to enhance the energy circulation for the healing process. It also promotes healing by increasing oxygen flow to the affected tissues to heal themselves. Thus, laser therapy reduces muscle inflammation and provides immediate TMJ relief.

Are there side effects?

Moreover, laser therapy provides pain management with no negative side effects, it is non-invasive, and each procedure takes no longer than 10 minutes. The number of treatments varies for each person. However, several patients have experienced long-term results after two to three treatments. Nowadays, there are many different types of laser dentistry, and so far the highest technology available is the Er:YAG and ND:YAG laser machine.

Is there an Age Restriction?

TMJ pain/dysfunction should not be neglected at any age because of its negative effects to our body health. An appropriate care and treatment plan will eliminate the pain as well as maintain daily function. Lastly, treatment varies depending on each patient, so there is a need for a careful consultation with a knowledgeable and experienced expert.
