Rolfing SI/Somatic Experiencing: Support Your Body’s Ability To Heal

Rolfing Structural Integration (Rolfing SI) alleviates stress and tension in the fascia, or connective tissue. This bodywork addresses the root cause of pain, discomfort, and lack of mobility by releasing the adhesions in the fascial layers. By approaching the body as a whole system rather than separate parts, it creates long lasting change. Rolfing can restore balance and ease movement. Rolf movement addresses unsupportive habitual postures and movement patterns with re-education and awareness.

Somatic Experiencing (SE™) further supports the emotional and mental aspects of the mind-body. SE™ is body-centered trauma support. In this model, trauma refers to incomplete reactions in the nervous system.

It is not an event that causes trauma, it is the nervous system’s capacity that determines whether we integrate an experience or get stuck. This can happen in response to an acute event like a car accident, injury, surgery, combat, etc. It could be from ongoing stress like chaos or abuse in the home or a demanding, fast-paced work environment.

Our nervous system is fantastic at surviving and often does so by overriding the more vulnerable expressions of an experience with what it perceives it needs to stay alive in the moment. For example, after a car accident we may go into shock, which allows us to quickly assess for further danger, get help and find safety. If the body didn’t go into shock we might feel scared and burst into tears. When we don’t get to be present to all that was suppressed in the moment, it stays in the body, tethering us to the past. In this example, it could cause anxiety when driving or seeing the same color vehicle as the one that hit us. These incompletions and injuries accumulate, deepening the tension patterns and taxing the body as it requires excessive energy to manage.

Because trauma and stress are stored in the fascia, together these holistically support the body’s ability to self regulate and heal. Freedom in the tissue and nervous system to optimally respond to the environment, supports greater ease in coping with and staying present to the joys and challenges of everyday life- physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually.

In a safe environment of non-judgment and attunement, clients are supported in experiencing a greater sense of well being and meeting their goals. Sessions can include Rolfing and/or Somatic support.
