We Are What We Think

Change is a process. This applies to all areas of life. The key to behavioral and physical change is to first figure out the steps of the process. Here are three key factors when using hypnosis to guide the human change process.

1. Changing Our Perspective

The main objective of hypnosis is to change a person's awareness level or perception of certain situations. Questioning an alternative reality lets the subconscious mind know that there are other options other than the one it has been clinging to so strongly. The subconscious mind does not know the difference between “illusions” and “reality”. Exploring new perspectives can quickly broaden its perception.

2. Changing the Way We Talk “Reframing”

Reframing is crucial for anyone wishing to lose weight or make any change. As humans, we associate ourselves with our thoughts. We also believe the individualized stories that we tell ourselves. When we monitor our words, we are constantly saying things like, “This is just the way that I am.” The subconscious mind identifies with this and relegates itself to this reality. One of the fastest ways to change is to develop a new life story. Instead of “I am addicted to sugar,” try “In the past, I have been challenged by sweets.” This is a paradigm shift in thinking.

3. Self-Awareness

People who are trying to lose weight or change behaviors often believe that overeating is the issue, while most often it is not. People tend to use food as a comfort or drug and just as with any drug use there is a secondary gain. Ask yourself, “What do I really want?” It might be security, it might be companionship, or it might be not feeling tired, sad or depressed. Once you have figured out what you actually need, seek an alternative to satisfy that need.
