Make Your Weight Loss Resolutions a Reality

The New Year, for many, means that it's time to reassess our health and wellness goals, join a gym, and get back on the road to success. For some, this could be the fifth or so year in a row that they have made a weight loss resolution, with little or no success.

There is always that “New Year's rush” at the gym every single year. And every single year the rush ends by the second Wednesday of January. Like clockwork, the gym is filled to capacity for the first two weeks, and then poof no more waiting in line for the Smith machine.

Why is it that we create such beautiful plans to better ourselves through healthy activity only to come to an abrupt stop, seemingly as quickly as we began?

Here is the secret it's easier to keep going than it is to restart every time we quit. The key is to remember why we started in the first place. It may be discouraging to step on the scale on the second day of exercise to see you've gained two more pounds, but don't worry this is just the beginning.

It typically takes, on average, four weeks for you to see results, and 6-8 weeks for others to notice and offer you kudos. This is worth it I assure you. It is worth every ounce of sweat and every minute spent in the gym.

There are an astounding number of people that have a gym membership, but don't use it. Why not? The number one excuse is time. Yes, life can become hectic after all, there are only 24 hours in a day. Look carefully at your schedule. Surely you can make time for yourself. Use that time for the gym.

Otherwise, find ways to add intentional exercise into your day. We all know that we are supposed to take the stairs rather than the elevator; so do it. We also know that parking away from the building is encouraged (as long as it is in a safe area).

Dr. Todd Miller offers a blog on YouTube called The Miller Method, and in a recent episode he offered suggestions on how to simplify adding intentional exercise to your day. He calculated the extra steps and learned that he was able to burn an astounding amount of extra calories over time by simply parking farther from the building.

So, let's unpack those activity trackers that we received this past year and put them to good use. Activity trackers quantify our activity in convenient apps so that we can make adjustments needed to add that intentional physical aspect into our day.

Music offers an additional boost in work productivity. Turn it up for exercise and dance those calories away with the stress of the day.

Exercise is a reward, so let's make it fun and keep going.
