Why Do People Develop Acne?

Unfortunately, acne is an extremely common disease which usually affects adolescents. Approximately 90 percent of all teenagers have acne to some degree at one point or another.

For those who have moderate to severe cases, the results of having a poor complexion during this time of social development can be both devastating and long-lasting.

Severe cases may also leave a mark physically by scarring the skin. Although most cases resolve by the time the patient reaches 25 years of age, acne may persist in adulthood. Some cases may even begin or worsen during adulthood.

What Is Acne? What
Causes Acne?

Acne is an inflammatory condition that usually occurs on the face, but may also be seen on the body. Multiple factors are thought to cause or have an affect on the severity of acne.

Heredity, the skin's oil production and natural bacteria, and even skin care products may play a role. A well-known controversial theory is that certain foods, namely chocolate and dairy products, contribute to acne. There have been a few studies showing this to be true, but most studies prove this to be false.

How Is Acne Treated?

Some basic steps which may help mild cases of acne include a daily skin care regimen with noncomedogenic products, and the use of over-the-counter acne products.

For more resistant or severe cases, prescription medications may help. Dermatologists have a large armamentarium of acne treatments at their disposal including both topical and oral medications.

Moderate to severe cases are usually treated with a combination of an oral antibiotic and some topical products.

Occasionally, Isotretinoin may be prescribed. Patients on Isotretinoin must have routine lab work and physician appointments while on the medication.

Are There Any New Treatments For Acne?

Isolaz is a new powerful treatment for acne that combines suction and light therapy. It clears acne quicker than conventional treatments, and can be used on all skin types. Treatments take about 15 minutes, and are very well tolerated leaving the skin a little pink for about an hour. For full results to be seen, patients must have a series of treatments.

For those with mild to moderate acne, a device called the BLU-U is an excellent, easy treatment. The BLU-U is a light illuminator that emits a specific wavelength of light which has been proven to kill acne-causing bacteria.

Most people with mild acne need several treatments per week for one month. Full results of the treatment are seen several weeks later. This easy treatment works for all skin types.

Another new, revolutionary treatment for acne is called photodynamic therapy. This therapy treats acne by shrinking oil glands and minimizing acne-causing bacteria. Treatments are performed by first applying a photosensitizing medication called Levulan to the skin. After an incubation period, the skin is washed and the patient is placed in front of the BLU-U light. This treatment is repeated every couple of weeks until the patient is

break-out free.
