Who Else Wants To Look Younger? What You Need To Know About Botox

Many people – especially, those of us who have reached middle age or beyond – wonder about dermal fillers and whether these procedures are right for them. It’s perfectly normal to want to look younger, and regain that youthful appearance in your facial areas. We all want to look as young as we feel, right?

Botox has become very popular due to its effectiveness in removing wrinkles. It is used to smooth wrinkles in the face/neck area to create a more youthful appearance. It is most often used on the thin wrinkles that surround the eyes (crow’s feet) and the mouth, but can also be used in other areas. It can also be helpful in treating migraine headaches, and can be used to decrease excessive sweating of the palms and underarms.

Botox utilizes the botulinum A toxin, a purified protein made from botulism bacteria. This temporarily paralyzes the nerves of the facial muscles so they don’t contract and cause wrinkles.

How Is the Procedure Performed?

First the skin is treated with a numbing agent. Then, small amounts of Botox are strategically injected in the different parts of the face. This is done using very thin needles that cause very minimal pain.

What Will My First Visit Be Like?

Your doctor will discuss with you the goals for the procedure, and which facial areas you’d like addressed. They may recommend other options and discuss their benefits and limitations. You’ll often be shown before/after photos of patients who have undergone this procedure.

How Long Does It Take, and What Results Can I Expect?

Usually this procedure takes about 10-30 minutes. It is done in your doctor’s office and you may go home immediately, resuming normal activity. Results are visible 3-5 days after and may last 3-4 months – sometimes longer. The procedure may be repeated and with each new treatment results are expected to last longer.

Side Effects or Risks?

Mild bruising/swelling may occur at the injection site. Numbness, soreness, and a burning sensation may be felt. In terms of risk this is a very safe procedure, especially when performed by an experienced doctor. However, there are risks such as infection setting in, fluid accumulation, injury to the skin, and others. To avoid unwanted side effects, it’s important to not massage the treated area.

An estimated 11 million people worldwide have used Botox, making it one of the most popular nonsurgical cosmetic procedures. To find out if it’s right for you, schedule a consultation with your local board-certified cosmetic facial surgeon.
