Dr. Joseph Oppong is Board Certified in Pain Medicine and Anesthesiology. As an undergraduate at the University of Richmond, where he graduated Suma Cum Laude, he decided that his love of science would be best served in the field of medicine. He chose the prestigious Emory School of Medicine and from there he completed his residency in Anesthesiology at the University of Maryland Medical Center. His interventional pain fellowship, under the tutelage of Dr. J.C. Rowlingson, one of the nation’s authorities on chronic pain management, was completed in 2009 at the University of Virginia Health Systems.

Post Fellowship, Dr. Oppong worked tirelessly to establish Community Pain Management, St. Agnes Healthcare, Baltimore which employs a multidisciplinary approach to chronic pain management. He worked at St. Agnes Hospital for three years before moving on to co-found Fairwood Spine and Pain Center, P.A. There, he served as President for 4 years. Realizing the need to offer expanded services for the ever-changing medical field, Dr. Oppong founded Innovative Pain Solutions Centers, P.A. in 2014 in order to better meet the needs of his patients. He believes in compassionate care as a modality in helping restore function to his pain patients.

Dr. Oppong is an advocate for the use of ultrasound-guidance for interventional pain procedures since it eliminates radiation exposure both to the patient and medical provider as seen with the traditional C-arm (X-Ray) machine. He is adept at interventions including: epidural injections (interlaminar and transforaminal approaches), facet blocks, nerve radiofrequency ablations, discography, percutaneous disc decompression, spinal cord and peripheral nerve stimulation, intrathecal (spinal) pain pumps, sympathetic nerve blocks, joint injections, and many other techniques.

He is a member of the American Society of Anesthesiology and American Academy of Pain Medicine.

In his leisure time, Dr. Oppong is an avid sports fan, particularly soccer and football. He enjoys traveling with his family and absorbing new cultures and cuisines.
