Reformed in 1991, Fort Washington Medical Center (FWMC) is a non-profit 37-bed acute care hospital in Princes George’s County, Maryland – a suburb of Washington, DC. The FWMC is the youngest hospital in the Maryland health care system, built for the community using community dollars. The hospital provides general inpatient services including adult medical/surgical care, ambulatory surgical services, 24-hour emergency services, radiology and other diagnostic services, laboratory services, and a four-bed intensive care unit.

It has one of the busiest emergency rooms in the metropolitan area, seeing over 40,000 patients each year, and employs more than 400 staff. Nexus Health, a private health care organization, owns and manages the hospital.

Sharnell S. Smith, MD, is the youngest African American female board-certified surgeon at Fort Washington Medical Center. She has over ten years of experience performing acute care hospital operations. Prior to joining Fort Washington Medical Center, she served as the acute care trauma surgeon at Winchester Medical Center in Virginia. Dr. Smith earned her medical degree from Howard University College of Medicine.

For convenience and additional privacy for the patient, Dr. Smith performs minor in-office procedures, in addition to performing surgeries in a typical hospital setting. Some of her specialties include, breast, colorectal, hernia, and gallbladder surgeries.
