Worrying about looks is an obsession for many. The endless onslaught of images and messages drive home the importance of beauty to our success and happiness. And while most of us know that real beauty starts from within, many of us still fall prey to savvy marketing and the promise of youth in a bottle (or at the end of a knife). Confidence. It's impossible to ignore. Confidence is that unshakeable belief that “we got this” no matter how difficult or dangerous “this” seems to be. But when we lack confidence everything is different. Everything from body language to the way we speak is impacted.

Getting To Confidence

Developing confidence is a process of flexing your “confidence muscle” daily. This happens when you vividly remember moments of confidence from your past, bring the confident feeling from your past into the present moment and then, anchoring the confident feeling into a word, gesture, or visual image that allows you to access the confidence anytime you choose. Flexing your “confidence muscle” is a simple three-step process 1) Visualize, 2) Feel, 3) Anchor.

While it would be impossible to explain the three-step process in detail here, there are three simple things you can do to help you feel more confident today. 1) Every morning, make a list of three things you are grateful for and every evening make a list of three things you did well that day. 2) Reverse self-criticism by immediately identifying one thing that is awesome about yourself every time you find yourself criticizing yourself. 3) Practice accepting compliments by saying “thank you”, smiling warmly, and taking five seconds to savor the compliment regardless of the sincerity of the person giving it.

The small steps above can lead to big changes, especially if done consistently. Those who take an active role in the change process are the ones who have the most success; those who expect for their environment to first change often fail.

One of the most powerful ways to change an unwanted habit or behavior and to develop more confidence is to change the “story” that explains why the habit or behavior or lack of confidence is there in the first place. And whether we know it or not, we all have a story that limits our success and holds us back. By rewriting our stories in a way that empowers us, we free ourselves to be authentic, limitless, confident in who we are and beautiful in every way.
